Is there any technique with more variations than Irimi nage? I don’t think so. Different instructors seem to teach this technique so differently from one another.

I myself love to teach different variations of Irimi nage - that of course often times differ from variations of other teachers.

In today’s video I’m going to share some clips from one of my recent hybrid classes, where we work on a specific variation of Irimi nage. And most importantly, we study it in bokken, shoto, and empty-hand formats, taking special note of the cuts that dictate the footwork.

And we create a vacuum, not to bring our partner IN, but to send them OUT. I know. It might be hard to imagine without seeing it in action. So I’ll share that with you in a second.

The principles presented can be applied to other variations of Irimi nage and will increase your success rate greatly.
